Harold K. Smith as bank guard William Henry Shores

Our annual Living History Tour at the historic Angelus Rosedale Cemetery took place this year on September 26. Every year, WAHA selects different individuals buried at the cemetery to portray.

This year people met:

Louise Peete (1865-1947), who lost two husbands to suicide, killed a lover in self-defense, then was conviced a murder when a body was found in her basement. Paroled in 1939, there was another string of suspicious deaths. She died in the gas chamber. Played by L. B. Nye.

William H. Shores (1859-1922), the first African American employee of the Security Trust & Savings Bank, founded in 1889 (predecessor to Security Pacific Bank/Bank of America). Played by Harold K. Smith.

Jean Goldkette (1893-1962), the “Prince of Jazz,” a jazz pianist and bandleader whose orchestras included, at various times, Bix Beiderbecke, Hoagy Carmichael, and Tommy Dorsey. Played by Tommy Krause.

Remi Nadeau (1867-1941), grandson of a Los Angeles pioneer whose family once owned the land the cemetery sits upon. He was a cattle rancher in Soledad Canyon and established a landmark deer preserve. Played by Michael S. Smith.

Katharine Putnam Hooker (1849-1935) and her daughter, Marion Osgood Hooker (1875-1968), both adventurers, artists and creative spirits who were friends of John Muir, William James, and astronomer George Ellery Hale. Katharine was twice shipwrecked, climbed mountains, and wrote travel books. Marian was one of the first women physicians in California and was a noted amateur photographer. Katharine was played by Colleen Paell, Marian by Julia McIlvaine.

Everett Sloan (1909-1965), well-known actor and member of Orson Welles’ Mercury Theater troupe. Starred in Citizen Kane, and was the announcer of the famous Welles broadcase The War of the Worlds. Played by Adam Janeiro.
